Moldova: Pro-Russia and pro-European coalition holds parliament meeting

While the Democrats held protests in the centre of Chisinau on Sunday, a new coalition of the Socialist Party PSRM and pro-European Union ACUM was working in the parliament. The day before President Igor Dodon's Party of socialists announced they had formed a coalition government with the ACUM bloc. The parliament approved Socialist Party leader Zenaida Greceanii as speaker. As she emphasised... Еще during the parliament meeting on Sunday, 'permanent bureau of the parliament is already working.» The meeting was attended by 61 deputies, which is a constitutional majority. Dodon, who was present in the parliament on Sunday, met with some of the PSRM deputies, as well as the ACUM bloc representatives. He told a press conference there are two ways to overcome the crisis. «The first decision is the pressure from our external partners and the recognition of the legality of the new government. The second solution is a massive mobilization of citizens and our supporters,» he stated. On Sunday, following months of deadlock, the Constitutional Court relieved Dodon of his presidential duties after he refused to dissolve Parliament as it had been mandated by an earlier Constitutional Court verdict. The court appointed former Prime Minister Pavel Filip as interim president. The newly appointed acting president then dissolved Parliament and called a snap election for September 6. However, Dodon has come under criticism as he refused to dissolve Parliament after the parties missed the June 7 deadline to form a government. Thousands rallied in Chisinau on Sunday demanding his resignation.
