Police officers and soldiers from the Mexican army were seen on the site of the failed attack on Mexico City Public Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch on Friday.
The vehicle in which the police chief was traveling was ambushed by a van carrying a group of men with long guns and fragmentation grenades at around 6:38 local time (11:38 GMT), according to Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
Two members of Garcia Harfuch's security team and a woman driving in the area were reportedly killed in the shooting, and twelve people were arrested.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador lamented the attack and expressed his solidarity and appreciation for the police chief.
It has not yet been confirmed who was behind the attack, although Garcia Harfuch attributed the act to the New Generation Jalisco Cartel.
