New graves were being dug in the Mexican city of Mexicali on Thursday, as it became the third city with the most registered cases of COVID-19 in the country.
The increase of deaths due to the virus forced the city council to expand an area of the municipal 'El Centinela' ('The Sentinel') cemetery.
«We had to work at a faster pace, with the risk that entails, to have the graves required by those who died done on time,» said grave digger Arturo Lara.
Mexicali, the state capital of Baja California, has 2,257 confimed cases of coronavirus and 200 related deaths as of Friday, according to the Mexican federal government's COVID-19 municipal map.
