Mexico: National Guard pepper sprays migrants near southern border

Clashes broke out between Mexican National Guard (GN) forces and Central American migrants who were asking for safe passage and asylum near southern city of Tapachula on Thursday. Footage shows GN forces facing off with about 800 mainly Honduran migrants before clashes break out as officers used pepper spray on migrants. Some were injured during the scuffles, leading some migrants to flee and... Еще seek refuge in buildings and nearby forests. GN officers could be seen restraining some migrants and getting those who did not flee to board busses. Many lost their belongings during the confrontation, which left the area dotted with personal items and suitcases. Earlier on Thursday the migrant caravan attempted its second large-scale entry attempt after hundreds of people managed to cross the border on Monday, over the Suchiate River. Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the objective of the National Guard is to protect the migrants, and blamed the «leaders» of the caravans and «conservatives» for attempting to provoke violent scenes.
