Mexico: Fireworks explosion kills 17 and injures 31 near capital

Two explosions at fireworks manufacturers have killed 17 people and injured at least 31 others in the town of Tultepec, north of Mexico City, on Thursday. Six emergency personnel — four firefighters and two police officers — were among the dead. It is thought they rushed to the scene, only to be killed by the second blast. Mexico has a long history of deadly firework explosions. A blast in... Еще Veracruz killed 29 in 2002, illegally-stored fireworks exploded in Celaya killing 69 in 1999, and a major fireworks detonation in Mexico City killed 61 people in 1988. Tultepec is one of Mexico's major fireworks-producing regions and the town's patron saint is San Juan de Dios, protector of firework makers. Mandatory credit: David Villanueva
