Thousands of people attended a rally called by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, also known as AMLO, in Tijuana on Saturday, in celebration of his government brokering a deal with the United States that avoids tariffs on Mexican goods in exchange for adjustments on immigration.
Rally-goers praised the work of AMLO in achieving the deal, who spoke to the gathered crowds from a stage... Еще at the event.
«He's the first president I know who is really a president of the people, who is alongside the people,» said professor Gonzala Ruano.
«The cancellation of the tariffs is a victory for Mexico, even though the conditions were not as advantageous as we would have wanted. But the fact that he intervened with the President of the United States, that is a great victory for me,» said student Sonia Alcantara.
US President Donald Trump's administration had threatened to impose 5 percent tariffs on all Mexican goods if Mexico failed to reduce the number of migrants who arrive via its southern borders, travelling on to the US.
On Friday, Trump and Obrador reached a deal that would reportedly see the US not impose tariffs, which were due to take effect on Monday, in exchange for Mexico's strengthening enforcement at its border with Guatemala and expanding its policy of taking back migrants.
