Malaysia: Royal families meet in Kuala Lumpur after Sultan Muhammad V abdicates

The members of Malaysia's Conference of Rulers met in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, after the abdication of Sultan Muhammad V was announced a day earlier. Malaysia has a unique elective monarchy structure where the nine members of the Conference of Rulers, who are the heads of nine out of 13 Malay states with hereditary rulers, elect a king, or Agong, from among themselves to serve a five year term in... Еще office. Six out of the nine ruling families attended the meeting, where it was decided that the Deputy King, the Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, would remain as acting king until a new election is held on January 24. Sultan Muhammad V was chosen as king in December 2016, and had taken a medical leave of absence in November. According to media reports the king's decision to abdicate may be related to his recent marriage to a 25 year-old Russian beauty queen and Miss Moscow 2015, but this has not been confirmed by Malaysian authorities.
