President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that the Catalan independence would pave the way for a divided European Union, when speaking from a press conference in Luxembourg on Friday. Juncker expressed his opposition to Catalonia's independence, since that would prompt a wave of similar actions from European regions that also want secession. «I wouldn't like a European Union... Еще in 15 years that consists of some 90 states. It's difficult enough with 21 states; and then 27 states», he added. The president also said that he had told Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to take measures to stop the Catalan crisis from escalating further saying, «Things have been done, but much remains to be done.» Juncker stated that he had rejected calls to act as mediator in the situation in Spain.
