The Lama temple in Beijing opened its doors to the faithful for the yearly Laba Festival on Wednesday, serving warm porridge to mark the eighth day of the 12th lunar month.
People queued for hours to get their first taste of Laba congee, the name of the dish, with many lighting incense and making prayers of offering.
«You have to get up very early to stand in line and I got up at 5 o'clock and... Еще I started to stand in line at 6 o'clock and then the doors opened at 9, so we stood in line for three hours but I think it's absolutely worth it,» said Christine, a tourist visiting the temple.
The tradition of drinking the porridge, cooked with fresh paddy rice, dried fruits and nuts on the Laba Festival, is observed throughout China every year. The congee is believed to bring good luck in the coming Chinese New Year.
