Long live the Dusya! Vets save iconic Hermitage cat after fire at Winter Palace

Dusya, one of famous Hermitage cats, was seriously injured after inhaling by carbon gas caused by minor fire in the Winter Palace's basement in Saint Petersburg, Friday. The fire was occurred in one of the utility rooms, smoke then spread through the basement, where more than 70 animals live. The cats were brought to a veterinary clinic where they were immediately provided with first aid, Dusya also underwent oxygen therapy and injection. Cats have been a fixture of the Hermitage Museum since the 18th century, when Elizabeth of Russia issued a decree for authorities to procure «the best and biggest cats» available due to the building being overrun with rats and mice.
