French President Emmanuel Macron said he would meet with Belarus opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as he spoke at a press conference with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, in Vilnius on Monday.
«It is in that spirit, and following her request, that I will meet tomorrow morning with opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who has found a home in your country for weeks now. But beyond meeting her, I want to address my support to all the Belarus people,» he said.
Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election of August 9 that saw incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against «a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud» in Belarus.
