Libya: UN-backed GNA forces approach Sirte as eastern offensive advances

Troops loyal to the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) were seen on Monday in proximity to the strategic town of Sirte, controlled by Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army forces. On Saturday, GNA commandment had launched an offensive to retake control of the eastern part of the country. The GNA troops' roadblock can be seen at the coastal highway leading to former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, with armoured vehicles and weapons deployed at the road section. Seizing the city would open for GNA the way to the country's main fuel export ports at the east, currently being an important strategic asset for Haftar's army.
