Prime Minister of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya Fayez Al-Sarraj called for general and presidential elections by the end of 2019 in a press conference in Tripoli on Sunday.
«I present today our political initiative to get out of the current crisis,» said Al-Sarraj in a bid to end the military conflict in the North African country as the Libyan National Army (LNA), led... Еще by General Khalifa Haftar has been trying to gain control of the capital Tripoli since April 4.
Al-Sarraj called for the formation of a «Libyan forum in co-ordination with the UN mission,» encompassing all Libyan parties and fractions to end the crisis.
«During the forum, a roadmap will be agreed upon for the next phase, and the appropriate constitutional rule will be adopted to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections before the end of 2019,» added Al-Sarraj.
The LNA, which controls eastern Libya, is aiming to take over territory from the UN-backed GNA, including the capital Tripoli. The country has been split between the two rivals since 2014. Haftar's efforts to capture Tripoli have met resistance from local armed groups.
