Libya: Gaddafi loyalists hopeful of Saif’s return to politics following rumoured release

Residents of former gaddafi stronghold Bani Walid expressed on Friday hope for the comeback of Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi -son of Libya's former leader- to politics following rumours of his release from prison. One local said that Saif al-Islam is the answer to Libya's enduring political crisis. «He has the needed experience to lift the country to a better place,» he said. Another stated Saif... Еще al-Islam should run for office «since he has been pardoned.» He added that Saif al-Islam needed «the criminal court to lift the warrants against him, so that he faces no restrictions internally or internationally.» Bani Walid is a former stronghold of former leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and the city Saif al-Islam reportedly fled to before being detained. Rumours of his release have been supported by sources including the Military and Municipal councils of Zintan, who released a statement condemning his release. In addition his lawyer Khaled al-Zaidi stated Saif was moving to another Libyan city due to security reasons and planned to make a public statement to the Libyan people in support of national reconciliation. News of his release are also backed up by claims he is leading military campaigns against militants. Proir to 2011, Saif al-Islam was expected to be the successor to his father. Since the Libyan uprising, he has been detained by militia in a prison in Zintan. He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed against civilians from the start of the uprising.
