Lebanon: Tillerson and Hariri discuss Lebanon-Israel border dispute

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri at Baabda Palace in Beirut, on Thursday. In a press conference held after their meeting, Tillerson discussed Hezbollah and the necessity of an offshore agreement between Lebanon and Israel. In regards to Hezbollah, he stressed the fact the US regards the Lebanese militia as a “terrorist organisation”, adding... Еще that, «It is unacceptable for a militia like Hezbollah to operate outside the authority of the Lebanese government”, before acknowledging the Lebanese armed forces as the “only legitimate defender of the Lebanese state.» When talking about recent tensions between Lebanon and Israel over their respective maritime border, Tillerson urged for an agreement saying it is necessary so that, «Private companies can go to work offshore and determine what in fact might be available in terms of natural resource development.» Earlier in the day, Tillerson was welcomed by his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil and Lebanese President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace. He also met with Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon Nabih Berri at his Ain al-Tineh residence. Tillerson is in Lebanon on an official visit, as part of a regional tour.
