Lebanon: Protesters amass in central Beirut on Independence Day

Protests against the political establishment in Lebanon continued amid 76th Independence Day anniversary celebrations in Beirut on Friday. The streets have been covered in the national colours, with protesters waving flags and banners while chanting political slogans amid celebrations to mark the country's independence from the French mandate in 1943. Protests have taken place across Lebanon for some five weeks, demanding the overhaul of the national political system, which they deem inadequate to address the country's economic and social problems. The ongoing movement is considered to be the largest public mobilisation the country has seen since 2015. The movement, which began on October 17, has so far resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri.
