Lebanon: Partial strike in Beirut demands acceleration of government formation

Shops were partially closed and life slowed down in Beirut on Friday as some union members went on strike to condemn months of delay in government formation. The strike which was called on by the Lebanese General Labor Union head Bechara Asmar on Tuesday reportedly saw flights come to a halt an hour in the morning at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport. Despite strike calls, Mohamad... Еще Shukeir, head of the chambers of commerce, industry and agriculture who also represents the private sector announced Friday as a normal working day. «You cannot run the country like this and also you can not mange this strike like this,» one resident commented. Another resident said that the strike would «fail» and deemed it «politicized.» Saad Hariri, who was elected prime minister of Lebanon in May 2018, has been struggling to form a cabinet due to complexities in forming a balanced representation of various parties and religious sects in the parliament.
