Lebanon: Iranian FM Zarif offers support for new Lebanese government

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced his country's willingness to work with Lebanon's new government, as he met with his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil on Monday during a two-day official visit to Beirut. «The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate and open up with the Lebanese government and with the Lebanese army, in any field that Lebanon considers useful,» said... Еще Zarif, during a joint press with Bassil at the Foreign Ministry. Referring to the continuing issue of US sanctions on Iran, Bassil commented that «Lebanon has no problem with any economic cooperation with Iran as long as this does not affect international resolutions and keep us always on the necessary international legal security side.» Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri announced the formation of a new government on January 31, following a nine-month deadlock that had lasted since the country's May 2018 parliamentary elections. The inclusion of three ministers affiliated with the Shiite group Hezbollah, including the Health Minister, has sparked claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Iran now 'controls' the new Lebanese government with Hezbollah acting as their proxy.
