Hundreds of Palestinian refugees gathered outside ESCWA headquarters in Beirut to protest the US’ Israel-Palestine peace plan, as a US-led workshop aimed at discussing the US$50 billion (€44 billion) proposal with regional leaders kicked off on Tuesday.
Demonstrators held up signs denouncing the plan and waved Palestinian flags as they condemned the participation of other Arab countries in the... Еще workshop, which the Palestinian leadership has boycotted. Hamas’ Lebanon representative Ahmed Abdel Hadi argued that Washington’s proposal was more of a ‘deal with the devil’ than an opportunity to see Palestinians prosper.
“'The Deal of the Century' seeks to liquidate the Palestinian cause, the rights of refugees and the Palestinian people, because the Bahrain conference wants to encourage the Palestinian to sell off his sacred and historical rights for money,” he said.
Israel has not yet announced a stance on the deal, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed willingness to hear out the proposal and chided Palestinian officials for not doing the same.
The so-called ‘Deal of the Century,’ which was unveiled by the White House on Saturday, promises to create 1 million new jobs for Palestinians and lists 179 possible infrastructure projects, including a highway between the West Bank and Gaza. However, the proposal has been met with hostility by Palestinians frustrated by the discounting the possibility of returning to their former homes.
