Lebanon: Factions rally outside Beirut UN offices after US vetoes Jerusalem UNSC resolution

Members of political parties and Palestinian factions staged a rally outside the UN headquarters in Beirut, Tuesday, denouncing US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital. Member of the Political Bureau of Hezbollah, Ghalib Abu Zeinab, said that «Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine, and no decision can change the reality of things.» Secretary-General of the... Еще Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in Beirut, Samir Abu Afash, stressed that «Jerusalem is our capital, the capital of the Arabs and the capital of the free world.» Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6 in a live televised address from Washington DC, simultaneously starting the process of relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv. On Monday, the US vetoed a UN resolution, which called on the withdrawal of Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. However, the Egyptian-drafted resolution was backed by 14 members of the UN Security Council, including some of the US allies. Palestinian officials have pledged to take the issue to the UN General Assembly in the event of a US veto on the Security Council. The announcement sparked a wave of protests throughout the world.
