Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte had a meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun in Baabda on Tuesday before giving a public statement on the recent explosion in Beirut and its aftermath, as well as the ongoing economic crisis in the country. Conte said that now was the moment Lebanon to rebuild the trust between its population and its institutions, following French President Macron's call for change after the nation was devastated first by a year-long economic crisis and then hit again by last month's deadly explosion at the Beirut port. "It's a demanding challenge, but a reachable objective. One that can be reached if the Lebanese authorities all commit themselves to a process of renewing the institutions as well as the governance. A process of renewal that clearly the civil society, the Lebanese population, has been requesting for a long time," stated Conte discussing the rebuilding of trust between Lebanese people and their institutions.
