Latvia: Riga marks 73rd anniversary of liberation from Nazi troops

Dozens of officials and locals marked the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of the Latvian capital from Nazi troops in Riga, Friday. Participants of the ceremony, including Russian Ambassador Evgeni Lukianov, laid wreaths and flowers at the Victory Memorial to the Soviet Army. Lukianov noted that he is «fully convinced that this monument won't have bad destiny» because «monuments fall under... Еще protection of intergovernmental and international agreements and other such accords, aimed at protecting these monuments and calling for their preservation.» The Soviet army liberated the Latvian capital from National Socialist occupation on October 13, 1944. The Red Army drove out Nazi forces from the city as part of a larger Baltic campaign in autumn of 1944 to liberate Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
