Kyrgyzstan: Xi, Rouhani agree to closer ties as tensions rise with US

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek on Friday, agreeing to boost bilateral ties in the face of rising tensions with the United States. Footage shows the leaders and their teams meeting in Bishkek, where the Chinese president was visiting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, of which Russia is one of the eight... Еще members and Iran has an observer status. Rouhani said Iran could play a key role in China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative which aims to establish trade routes linking Asian and African countries to China in a modern Silk Road. The threat of a trade war has loomed over the US-China relationship since the countries started imposing escalating tariffs on imports from each other in 2018 while trying to negotiate a trade deal. Talks between the US and Iran have also stalled over the endangered nuclear deal, leading the US president to issue threatening tweets saying threats from Iran would mean the country's «official end» after Iran announced its partial withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in May, one year after the US withdrew from the deal and re-imposed sanctions on Iran.
