A 5.5-meter (18 feet) tall statue of German philosopher and Communist leader Karl Marx that was gifted by China, was unveiled in his home-town of Trier on Saturday, on the occasion of his 200th birth anniversary. The statue was erected on a platform right in front of the former Marx family home on Friday, but the unveiling ceremony took place a day after, exactly on his day of birth. Marx was born in Trier in on 5 May, 1818, and lived there before leaving for university. Frequently exiled for his political views, he lived throughout Europe for decades before settling in London, where he lived until his death in 1883.
