One of the largest domed stadiums in the United States was destroyed in a scheduled implosion in downtown Atlanta on Monday. The Georgia Dome was blown to pieces by more than 2,000 kilograms (2 tonnes) of explosives at 07:30 local time. Dozens of people gathered to enjoy the show. One onlooker described the demolition as «a historical moment,» since the dome had been there «for a long time... Еще.» Another onlooker described the scene as «awesome,» adding that «it just came down in a couple of seconds.» The dome, which opened in 1992 and cost US $214 million (€182m) was precisely razed within about 15 seconds. The dome was home to the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL), and has been replaced by the $1.6 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium close by.
