Japan: Voters head to polls in snap election

Voters hit the polls to cast their ballots in a snap election to the country's Lower House of the Diet, as seen in a polling station in Tokyo, Sunday. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had dissolved the parliament and called for early elections last month, in a bid to keep his conservative Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition's majority in the parliament's lower house, where it had a two-thirds «super... Еще» majority before dissolution. Pre-election polls project a decisive win for Abe's LDP and its coalition partner Komeito, which are facing competition from a divided opposition. The polls opened at 07:00 local time (22:00 GMT Saturday) and will close at 20:00 local time (11:00 GMT).
