Japan: Thousands commemorate 72nd anniversary of Hiroshima atomic bombing

Thousands of people commemorated the 72th anniversary of the dropping by the US of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, with floating lanterns on the banks of the Motoyasu River at the Hiroshima Peace Park, on Saturday. Locals and visitors alike wrote messages for a peaceful future on the paper lanterns, before floating them along the river according to traditional Japanese customs for the deceased... Еще. The bombings, on Hiroshima and three days later in Nagasaki, claimed the lives of 140,000 people in the former and 74,000 people in the latter. Many died immediately while others succumbed to injuries or passed-away due to radiation-related illnesses weeks, months and years later.
