Around 180 bidders, chosen in a lottery, attended a Ministry of Defence's first auction of used equipment in Tokyo on Sunday.
According to Minister of Defence, Taro Kono, who also attended the event, «we were planning to have 450 people here today, but with the recent situation with COVID-19, people outside Tokyo were asked not to attend.»
One of the bidders, Masatoshi Kubo, said, that he had bought a Self-Defence Force personnel uniform patch as a sign of gratitude. «At the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, my parents' house was in Iwate, and the Self-Defence Forces helped people there when the tsunami hit. They were very kind and helpful,» he added.
The reported aim of the auction was to improve the working conditions of the Self-Defence Force personnel. According to media reports, the auction organisers managed to collect 54,700 dollars.
