Thousands flocked the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Wednesday, to watch Emperor Akihito last New Year's address before his abdication in April.
«I hope this year will be a good year for as many people as possible,» Akihito told the well-wishers.
«At the beginning of the year, I pray for the peace and happiness of the people of our country and the world,» he added.

Their eldest son Crown Prince Naruhito will inherit the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1. This marks the first time in 200 years that an imperial succession involving living monarchs will take place.
