Over a million people were ordered to evacuate their homes as heavy rains lashed the southwestern island of Kyushu, leading to mudslides and flooding. Footage from Saturday, 30 June when the rains started, show a fast-rising, swollen river in the Seta area of the Kumamoto Prefecture.
Unconfirmed reports indicate at least 20 people have died or are missing, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledging... Еще to «carry out our best rescue and lifesaving efforts» and Japan's Ground Self-Defence Force dispatching troops to affected areas.
Authorities forecast that the rains will continue through Saturday, and could also hit eastern Japan.
