Several thousand protesters, with asylum-seekers and migrants among them, marched through central Rome to protest the eviction of around 100 refugees from a building they had occupied for four years, Saturday.
With banners reading “Protect people not borders,” placards condemning the conflation between ‘refugees’ and terrorists’ and megaphones repeating pro-refugee slogans, the peaceful march... Еще carried on through the streets of Rome amid heavy police presence.
On August 19 security forces cleared the Palazzo Curtatone building near the Independence Square, which had been occupied by migrants, reportedly mostly from Eritrea and Ethiopia, since October 2013. Around 500 police officers were involved in the evacuation operation, which since sparked a wave of protests and clashes between migrants and police.
