Italy's Senate authorised prosecutors to put far-right leader Matteo Salvini on trial over charges of illegally detaining migrants at sea in August 2019, during a vote in Rome on Wednesday.
«I believe I have defended my homeland. I don't ask for a prize, because I was paid for that. But if there has to be a trial, let there be a trial,» League leader Salvini told the Senate.
Salvini is accused... Еще of illegally keeping a reported 131 migrants aboard the Gregoretti boat off Sicily for almost a week in August 2019.
«I proudly vindicate, and I want to yell it to the world, that the policies of control and rigour have saved thousands of human lives,» Salvini said.
League Senators left the chamber rather than take part in the vote. The official results of the vote are expected to be communicated after 18:00 GMT.
