Italy: Senate lifts Salvini’s immunity in migrant ship case

Italian Senate voted in Rome on Thursday to strip Lega Party leader Matteo Salvini of parliamentary immunity to allow him to stand trial for allegedly illegally detaining migrants at sea last year. The Senate rejected the request to keep Salvini's immunity by 149 votes to 141 with one abstention. Salvini faces charges from Sicilian prosecutors for allegedly abusing his power as interior minister to block the Spanish NGO Open Arms ship from docking in Lampedusa in August 2019. His decision forced the vessel with over 150 migrants on board to stay at sea for almost three weeks.
