The Sea-Watch 3 migrant rescue ship docked at Licata's port in Sicily on Tuesday as news filtered through that captain Carola Rackete had been freed by an Italian judge.
A group of citizens welcomed the ship's arrival with messages of support for the ship's captain.
Rackete, a 31-year-old German nation, was detained after refusing to comply with a ban on entering Italy's territorial waters. The... Еще vessel was carrying more than 40 migrants and after weeks at sea the captain decided to port in Lampedusa over the weekend.
This afternoon a judge said Rackete had not broken the law and she had been carrying out her duty to protect human life.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who leads the far-right party Lega, said in a statement that he had hoped for a tougher response from the Italian justice system and promised to expel Rackete as soon as possible. He has previously accused migrant rescue ships of human trafficking.
