A new camp for hundreds of migrants was filmed being built at a former military air base base between the Sicilian towns of Vizzini and Militello on Tuesday.
According to reports citing the Italian Interior Ministry, the camp will be used to quarantine migrants only if there are no available places in other centres throughout Italy.
Vizzini residents voiced their concerns with the new camp, saying it made them worried for their safety.
«I am scared if someone runs away, I think an army should be there 24/7 because we are obviously all worried for this situation,» one Vizzini resident said.
On Monday, Catania Prefect Claudio Sammartino requested Rome to send in army and police reinforcements.
