Italy: Renzi lambasts 'entrepreneurs of fear' in final pre-election rally

Partito Democratico (Democratic Party, PD) leader Matteo Renzi said Italy needs «concreteness, not entrepreneurs of fear,» during his final election rally in Florence on Friday ahead of the March 4 elections. Renzi, Prime Minister of Italy between 2014 and 2016, called the upcoming elections a «derby between the ones that incite to hatred and the ones that try to solve issues.» Accusing the... Еще right-wing Lega Nord party of fomenting «a hunt against those who are different,» Renzi defended the migrant policy of the last PD-led governments. «We are proud of having saved hundreds of thousands of human lives, and of not playing on the fear of other people,» he said. Renzi also called the Lega Nord and 5 Star Movement (M5S) parties a «coalition of anger» and Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the radical left a «coalition of nostalgia.» The PD, on the other hand, would offer «seriousness, concreteness, solidity, solidarity.» «We will go to the government of this country to keep changing it,» Renzi told the cheering crowd. Calling the February 3 anti-migrant shooting in Macerata «the ugliest moment in this election campaign,» Renzi invited the crowd to close the meeting by singing the national anthem «to say that Italy is not of these fascist assassins.»
