Italy: Relatives demand justice for COVID-19 victims in Bergamo

Around 100 relatives of COVID-19 victims from all over Italy gathered in front of the prosecutor's office in Bergamo on Monday to demand justice for the virus' victims. The rally was organised by the committee «Noi Denunceremo — Truth and Justice for the Victims of Covid 19.» The committee has addressed a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and to European Court for Human Rights President Robert Ragnar Spano calling on them to supervise investigations currently taking place in Lombardy. Around 100 further individual complaints were filed on Monday. «We just want to know exactly what happened here and why the virus is all over the world but just here in Bergamo, Brescia and Lombardy [it] did such a huge massacre,» said the committee's president Stefano Fusco. «We want to see if there is someone responsible or if it was just a fatality.» A Bergamo resident whose father passed away with the virus, said that he «died in the hospital after two months of intensive care. They took too long to take him away [to the hospital]. We were calling the ambulance for three days while the emergency medical station and the general practitioner were basically doing nothing.» According to official data, Italy's northern Lombardy region, where Bergamo is located, has recorded over 16,700 deaths and more than 94,000 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the outbreak.
