Italy: Protesters rally against housing evictions in Rome

Protesters took to the streets of Rome, Tuesday, to demonstrate against the eviction of residents who are unable to meet their mortgage and rent payments. Demonstrators held banners against eviction and called on politicians to do more to tackle the issue. “With the crisis, this situation has become very hard. The main consequence is not being able to make ends meet. They have to choose... Еще between paying the rent, food, or school for the children. They often cannot pay the rent,» said member of the Decent House movement, Paolo. According to trade unions, thousands of families suffer evictions every year in Italy. “Institutions don’t provide a solution. So we are obligated to occupy [homes]. We do not have a choice. Otherwise, we will have to live on the streets. Nobody gives any solution for poor people,» stated Ray, who has been affected by eviction. However, many organisations are trying to help those who are not able to pay their rent. “We are trying to use available public buildings, the patrimony that is the property of the town hall. And the disused patrimony that is available, like abandoned houses that can be useful,» said CGIL Trade Union member Roberto Cellini.
