Italy: Protest calls for large vessels ban in Venice following cruise ship crash

Thousands flooded the streets of Venice on Saturday to call for large ships to be banned from the city’s Giudecca canal almost a week after a cruise ship crashed into a tourist boat injuring four. Protesters carried banners and flags and chanted against the big ships in a rally organised by the «No Big Ship» movement. «Venice, the city without cars, is the third city with the most polluted air... Еще in Europe,» said the protester Tomasso Cacciari who added that the cruises in the city should come to a halt out of concern over people and buildings' safety. The protest came after the cruise ship MSC Opera crashed into a tourist boat in the Giudecca canal, one of Venice’s major waterways leading to the popular St Mark's Square.
