Activists and the priest of San Gerlando Church in the Italian island of Lampedusa have taken to sleeping outside to express solidarity with the 40 migrants still stuck on board a Sea-Watch rescue boat, as footage from Thursday shows.
The activists and priest have been sleeping rough outside the church for nine nights, in what Priest Don Carmelo La Magra called an «act of solidarity» with the... Еще migrants who have been prevented by Italian authorities from disembarking.
«They're sleeping on the boat's floor, covered by thermal blankets and to show them our solidarity and to feel them closer we started as well to sleep in the square. It's not a protest, it's an act of solidarity with them,» he explained.
The German Sea-Watch vessel rescued the migrants off the Libyan coast on June 12, but was forbidden from entering Italian waters. However, on Wednesday, the ship's captain defied authorities and headed for the Lampedusa port.
Two migrants were reportedly evacuated overnight on Friday for medical reasons, leaving 40 passengers still stuck at sea.
