Italy: Police clash with anti-Salvini protesters in Mondragone

A group of protesters demonstrating against the leader of Italy's right-wing Lega party Matteo Salvini clashed with police in Mondragone on Monday. The police responded with force, using batons on the demonstrators leading to injuries. «I was at the front and law enforcement told us to retreat, which we were doing perfectly. As soon as we started moving back I started feeling baton hits from both the right and left sides,» said one of the injured protesters. Salvini was expected to give a speech to his supporters, but the commotion and unrest meant he only had two minutes on stage. «First of all, I don't know which one it was, they don't have identification numbers. They don't wear anything with which we can recognise them. This hurts because they can attack you and then say: 'We know where you live.' They cause so much psychological damage and that hurts a lot, on top of the physical damage,» explained the bleeding protester.
