Citizens of Naples commented on the recent announcement that the great-grandson of Italy's former fascist leader Benito Mussolini will run for elections in the European Parliament, on Thursday.
Caio Giulio Cesare Mussolini is the grandson of Vittorio, Mussolini's second son. He was born in Argentina and lived half of his life in Venezuela.
On April 7, the right-wing party Fratelli d'Italia... Еще (Brothers of Italy) announced that he will be running in the upcoming European elections in the Southern Italy electoral district. He will be the third descendant of Italy's fascist dictator after granddaughters Alessandra Mussolini, herself seeking re-election in the European Parliament, and Rachele Mussolini, a city councilor in Rome.
Fratelli d'Italia already began putting billboards in Naples and locals are divided in their opinions, mostly on age lines. According to one, the young Mussolini «will collect [the vote] of some seniors that will vote for him for the flag, but they won't make much noise, neither in the general elections nor in the European elections.»
Another person said that the county needs «20 Benito Mussolinis, not one. In the past one was enough, but now we need 20.»
Young citizens seemed most opposed to Mossolini's candidacy: «clearly this is not change, on the contrary is a return to the past. Return to something that hurt us and that was horrible for our country, horrible for the whole world and for all humanity. It is something that for no reason at all should happen again.»
