Little Raisha was hugged again by her mother in a Taormina hospital on Monday, following a delicate heart surgery, 40 days after her premature birth in Palermo.
«We waited for all the tests related to COVID and then the girl underwent surgery last Monday. She weighed only 1.4 kg (3lbs) and now a week after the operation, seeing her in her mother's arms is an extraordinary thing,» said Sasha Agati, head of paediatric cardiac surgery at Taormina hospital.
«This is not a job that can be done alone and when such complex cases happen everyone's approach makes all the difference and ultimately gives results,» he added.
Hafiza, the mother, gave birth at 30 weeks, after realizing she was sick with COVID-19. The baby was then hospitalised in Taormina, near Messina, with the mother recovering from the disease in the meantime.
