Italian Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini claimed that the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea and reaching the shores of Italy was reduced to 2,000 down from 14,000 the previous year, during a press conference at the Lega Nord's headquarters in Milan, on Monday.
«From 1 January to the last hours, the latest updated figure for this year's data records around... Еще 2,000 arrivals through the Sea ... compared to 14,000 last year,» stated Salvini.
«The number of dead and missing reported, according to who was on the boats, was around 15,000 between 2015 and 2018. In 2019, two bodies were recovered and 500 were declared missing and we are in the middle of June,» he added.
«So the policy of controls and seriousness leads not only to an 87 percent reduction in the number of landings, but also to a 100 percent reduction in the number of dead and missing. For this reason, any pirate or abusive vessel or supporter of the smugglers operating in Libyan waters encourages departures and is complicit in any new deaths and missing persons,» Salvini continued.
After referencing the Pope's exhortation to save lives, Salvini alleged that «we are doing this,» adding «I leave you to judge who saves lives and who condemns people to death.»
