Italy: Mafia convict holds five people hostage in Reggio Emilia — reports

A man convicted in an anti-mafia trial has taken five people hostage in a post office of the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia on Monday, according to reports. According to reports, the suspect is 55-year-old Francesco Amato who has barricaded himself inside the post office with four employees and the director of the branch. Amato was recently sentenced to 19 years behind bars following a trial regarding infiltration of the 'Ndrangheta Calabrian mafia group in the northern Italian Emilia-Romagna region, where Reggio Emilia is located. Amato had been on the run since the conclusion of the 'Aemilia' trial last week which gave 118 sentences totalling over 1,200 years in jail.
