Protesters rallied in front of Milan Cathedral on Saturday demanding the resignation of Lombardy's regional government over its management of the coronavirus crisis.
Demonstrators accused the authorities of dismantling the public healthcare system, once considered the best in Italy. They also blamed the ongoing privatisation of the sector for the lack of hospitals and medical staff during the pandemic.
«We are talking about those who did not declare the red zone in Bergamo's province, those who have abandoned doctors to their fate and let many of them to be infected and die,» said doctor and politician Vittorio Agnoletto referring to Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana and health minister Giulio Gallera.
«Do not allow those who have terribly handled the situation so far, to continue creating disasters even in Phase 2 and Phase 3,» he added.
