Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that Hong Kong’s one country, two systems principle is “essential,” amid talks held with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, in Rome on Tuesday.
«When it comes to Hong Kong, I reiterated that together with all our EU partners we emphasised the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong on the basis of the one state, two systems principle, which is essential,” said Di Maio.
The Italian minister also thanked China for “the solidarity and collaboration shown during the worst moments of this health crisis,” and that he agreed with Wang Yi to relaunch the two countries’ economic partnership.
Italy was the first major democracy to sign an agreement to join China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, last year.
This was Wang Yi's first foreign trip since the coronavirus pandemic broke out.
