Italian health officials gave a press conference on the latest developments of coronavirus in Italy at the Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome on Friday, confirming that two patients have tested positive for the virus.
“Two patients tested positive for the new coronavirus and have been admitted to the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani. They... Еще are a Chinese couple from the city of Wuhan in the province of Hubei in China,” said Head of the Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani, Dr Emanuele Nicastri.
“Another 12 patients from other areas of China affected by the epidemic have been admitted to our institution. These patients have modest respiratory symptoms and are now being tested for the new coronavirus. Another nine patients who have been isolated in our institute, have already been discharged after the negative test results for coronavirus detection,” he added.
Giuseppe Ippolito, the Scientific Director of the institution, urged Italians to “avoid discrimination” when dealing with Chinese people, as only very few had come from Wuhan, and moreover said that “people should apply the same measures that they apply during times of influenza, wash their hands regularly and follow instructions on how to sneeze safely,” along with other methods to avoid possible infection.
The newly discovered virus, which originated in the now-quarantined central Chinese city of Wuhan, has spread to 23 countries, including Germany, France, Finland Canada and the US, prompting the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare it a global health emergency.
