Italy: Govt. to conduct 'preliminary recognition mission' in Libya amid naval support request

Minister of Defence Roberta Pinotti announced that the Italian government will «conduct a preliminary recognition mission in Tripoli to identify the technical and logistical needs of Libyan [authorities]», when speaking to the Lower House and Senate defence and foreign committees about the fight against illegal immigration, in Rome, Tuesday. Pinotti's words followed the head of the Government of... Еще National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj's request for Italy to provide Libya with technical naval support. Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano explained that on July 23 al-Sarraj wrote a letter to Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni inviting the Italian government to send «technically suitable naval support, capable of providing all the necessary help to counter human traffickers, to counter illegal immigration.» The naval support would flank «Libyan navy units that are operative exactly on these matters.» Pinotti then stated that the Italian government will conduct a «preliminary recognition mission in Tripoli to identify the technical and logistical needs of Libyan [authorities].» She specified that the mission has ceased to be purely a national mission and was now «a bilateral one.» The defence minister at last underlined that, «on the base of international law, the self-defence of our soldiers is always legitimate.» On July 25 the head of the Government of National Accord of Libya Fayez al-Sarraj and head of Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar met with French President Emmanuel Macron near Paris. The peace talks were aimed at resolving the current tensions in Libya and bringing peace and political stability to the region.
