Italy: Five Star Movement presents MP uninominal candidates for March elections

Candidate Prime Minister for the Five Star Movement party (Movimento 5 Stelle) Luigi Di Maio presented the party’s uninominal college candidates for the March 4 elections, at a press conference in Rome on Monday. The M5S candidate roster included academics, journalists, athletes and entrepreneurs, among others. Di Maio defined the candidates as «super competent people» and expressed a goal... Еще to «give Italy the best parliamentary group it ever had.» Candidates included two-times Olympic swimming gold medalist Domenico Fioravanti and Commander Gregorio De Falco, who oversaw rescue operations during the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise liner shipwreck. De Falco compared Italy to a ship and underlined the necessity of changing its direction “having clearly established its route.” Political economist and candidate Lorenzo Fioramonti underlined a necessity to «rebuild Europe because if this Europe does not change it will fail.» «I imagine myself in changing the treaties, the parameters and the things that strangle our economy today,» he added. The anti-establishment M5S has seen a recent surge in support ahead of the March 4 elections, where it will compete against a right-wing coalition that includes Silvio Berlusconi’s Go Italy! (Forza Italia) party and the Northern League (Lega Nord) and a left-wing coalition spearheaded by the centre-left Democratic Party (Partito Democratico).
